Every year, Katara Cultural Village organizes The Katara Traditional Dhow Festival. It was the 6th one this year, between 15 November – 19 November 2016. The event is inspired by not only Qatar’s but the GCC’s rich maritime heritage. It’s a reminder for the new generation of the country of the rich maritime legacy and the Pearl diving days of their ancestors.
First of all, I just LOVE Katara.. that place has such a rich vibe of theatre, music, literature, visual arts and culture. Katara is a hub created to promote human interaction through art and cultural exchange! (How terrific is that!).
Katara hosts numerous Art workshops, Exhibitions and Cultural Festivals throughout the year. To give you an idea, December is loaded with events like the Ajyal Youth Film Festival, Romanian Folklore Night, Oil Painting Workshop, 3D Jewelry Workshop, Paper Cut Art Workshop, Painted Stories Exhibition, QatArt HandMade Market (read here if you missed my post on that) and lots more! For more details on the events happening in Katara, you can check their website.
The Dhow Festival hosts a number of Dhow boat sailors from within the region, who take part in various competitions. There are folk groups from Qatar, Oman and Bahrain that entertain the audience with their folkloric traditional performances.
Along with the rowing, boat launching, diving and other competitions.. there is also a photography and fine art competition. The place was buzzing with photographers with their huge cameras (and other gear like flash lights, soft boxes etc.) , while in one area, there were lots of artists sitting and painting the traditional dhows (and the prizes are HUGE amounts of CASH! ) This place has so much soul!
The place was buzzing with locals and expats alike.. everyone enjoying the culture and heritage of the country we live in and call home.
Here are some pictures I managed to take on the last day of the festival.. Enjoy!(Confession:I had no idea about the photography competition, otherwise would have tried to take some better shots..but anyhow here is my humble attempt at capturing the vibe!)
I had an amazing time..Don’t worry if you missed it this year, it will be back next year! Hope you enjoyed this photo journey with me!
